With all of the talk of Extreme Makeover Home Edition, there has just as much talk about those same charitable volunteers considering helping Habitat for Humanity of Lincoln County.  I personally have been involved in Realtor Care Days, where we make repairs to homes for people that do not have the means to do so themselves, but I have never built a home for a family.  I can imagine it is very rewarding whether you are on TV and Ty is there or not.

Considering all of the Facebook posts made by friends, I thought it was good time to look into Habitat for Humanity in Lincoln County.  You can find their website at http://www.habitatlcnc.org/.

About Habitat for Humanity of Lincoln County

Habitat for Humanity of Lincoln county was started in 1992, and since then has worked to build affordable housing for low income families in Lincoln County.  Our Mission is to provide decent, affordable housing to lower income families who would not be able to afford a home through a conventional mortgage.

Our Affiliate office and ReStore are located at 809 East Sycamore Street Lincolnton, North Carolina 28092; click here for hours and location.

What is a ReStore?

A ReStore is a store that accepts donations of new and gently used items from individuals and businesses in the community, and sells those items to the public at a reduced cost, usually 50-70 percent of the original retail value. All proceeds go toward building Habitat homes with the local Habitat affiliate.

Our Mission

 Through the selling of donated construction and home related items:
- Increase the number of homes build with low-income families through Habitat for Humanity.
- Prevent usable items from being put in landfills.
- Provide quality building materials to the general public at discounted prices.

The Blue Heron on Lake Norman located at 4339 Little Fork Cove Rd. Denver NC 28037 Phone 704-483-4408.  Their Website.  You can find an abundance of information on their website.  Their website allows you to make reservations online and it seems their stays start at $130 a night.

They have also provided a little history:  We opened our doors in March 2006 for our first guests and we have welcomed numerous guests from Pennsylvania, Texas, Indiana, Maryland, California, New York, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Vermont, Rhode Island, the UK, New Zealand, as well as North Carolina. We have been pleased that all have been very exclusive guests!

The Blue Heron offers two bedrooms, the Bessie and the Bonnie, named after two of our grandmothers. Both rooms have a water view and include a private bath, exterior entrance and a queen size bed.

Due to liability limitations we are not be able to accept guests under the age of 16, nor allow more than two people to a room. Rex (our outside Border Collie) is rather insistent that we not allow other pets and of course no smoking in the house.

Our dock can accommodate a boat and we welcome guests that wish to arrive from the water.

Our breakfast menu includes a standard breakfast which we will review with you when you make a reservation or when you arrive, and we also have a snack table always stocked with delights. Sodas, tea, and coffee are always available. Please call or use our online reservation site to make reservation arrangements.

The White Oak Inn Bed and Breakfast is situated in Lincolnton, North Carolina.  The White Oak Inn is a three story, Southern Traditional home with two levels of splendid porches wrapped around the front.  The Bed and Breakfast occupies the lower level and gives guests added privacy.  The 8 ½ acre property is surrounded by an expansive lawn, wooded areas with walking trails, and two ponds.

This year we will have a special selection of one of a kind “face” bowls. These collector bowls will be $20 each and limited to one per person.

The Betty G. Ross Recreation Park is located on South Grove Street in Lincolnton and offers a wide variety of recreational activities: a nature trail that is just under a mile in length and runs along the wooded bank of the South Fork River; a large covered shelter with a grill makes an ideal location for an afternoon picnic. Visitors can enjoy the specified areas for volleyball, horseshoes, and a large children’s playground.

When weather permits, there is a swimming pool that is open seven days a week starting in June until Labor Day Weekend. The William M. Lentz inside court activities include basketball, racquetball, and handball.

  Energy Explorium

  Duke Power built this unusual facility in 1986 on the shores of Lake Norman on NC Highway 73 in Mecklenburg County. The Explorium and related facilities are available both as an educations and enjoyable experience. The Explorium is an energy information center of Duke Power, with hands on exhibits that deal with how electricity is used in the home and how Duke Power makes electricity. They offer a 20-minute movie on Lake Norman and the lake community, a widflower garden, nature trail, picnic area, fishing area, and outdoor exhibits on the environment and Duke’s generating facilities.

  The Energy Explorium is open Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m and on Saturday from 12:00 Noon to 5:00 p.m. The facility is closed on Sunday, New Year’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.  For additional information, please call 1-800-777-0003.

Denver Mountain Bike and Running Trail

A new mountain bike and running trail beside the R-Anell Housing Group facility recently opened in the Denver area.  The trail is located by entering through the R-Anell gate off Highway 16 North near the south side entrance of Rock Springs Elementary School.  The bike trail is open daily from dusk to dawn and is free to the public.  The open time is strictly enforced by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department.  Motorized vehicles are prohibited. Helmets are required.

Lincoln Cultural Center

Located at 403 East Main Street in Lincolnton, the Lincoln Cultural Center is the center of arts and history in Lincoln County. The former Baptist Church, built in 1923, now provides a performance venue for theatrical productions by the resident Lincoln Theatre Guild, concerts presented by the Lincoln Community Concert Association. and other local and national acts.

The center is also home to the Arts Council of Lincoln County, featuring rotating visual art exhibits and public community art classes. The Lincoln County Historical Association operates the Lincoln County Museum of History, housed in the center along with its archival libaries, donated collections, research areas, and offices.

The Lincoln Cultural Center facilities are also available to the public for rental for private and community events. To learn more, please call 704-732-9055. Hours of operation are Monday – Friday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Saturday 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.
